Excerpt from The New Japan
Progress was not rapid. In the first twenty-five years, by 1900, there were Japanese Protes tant Christians, representing less than one-tenth of one percent of the total population. In 1926, at the end of another twenty-five years, when the government made awards to those who had contributed most to the development of social work since 1868, twenty-two out of the thirty-two persons so honored were Christians. In 1956, at the end Of the third twenty-five-year period, when the government was asked to name the four outstanding leaders in the field of social work in Japanese history, all four were Christians.
