Definition. Forestry may be defined as the art of raising repeated crops of timber on soils unsuited to agriculture. Under certain circumstances, however, agricultural land may be used to grow trees to good advantage, as in raising catalpa in the Middle West.

It will be seen from this definition that forestry and agri culture are not antagonistic, but that each is complementary to the other and a proper appreciation and use of both is necessary to the proper use of land in any country.
