Excerpt from An Ethical Essay

Be it Remembered, That on the twelfth day of May, A.D. 1830, in the fifty-fourth year of the Independence of the United States of America, Joshua Ward, of the said District, has deposited in this office the title of a hook, the right whereof he claims as proprietor, in the words following, to wit:

"An Ethical Essay: or an Attempt to enumerate the several Duties which we owe to God, our Saviour, our Neighbours, and ourselves; and the Virtues and Graces of the Christian Life contrasted on the opposite pages with their opposite Vices and 111 Dispositions. To each of which are subjoined some loose Azotes, imperfect Hints, and common Observations, serving to illustrate, limit, or enforce them. Intended to assist in the important Duty of Self Examination. By the late Edicard Augustus Holyohe, MD , Ll.D., A. A. S. To which is added an Appendix, containing some miscellaneous Papers and Prayers. With a Biographical Memoir, by John Brazer."

In conformity to the Act of the Congress of the United States, entitled "an Act for the encouragement of learning, by securing the copies of Maps, Charts, and Books, to the authors and proprietors of such copies, during the times therein mentioned; and also to an Act entitled an Act supplementary to an Act, entitled an Act for the encouragement of learning, by securing the copies of Maps, Chart Pand Books to the authors and proprietors of such copies during the times therein mentioned; and extending the benefits thereof to the arts of designing, engraving and etching historical and other prints."
