Charles Dickens, the greatest English novelist, was born February 7, 1812, at Landsport, near Portsmouth, Eng land. His education was received in public schools and he began life as a newspaper reporter, after having served for a time as a clerk in an attorney's office. His Pickwick Papers, published in 1836-1837, established his literary reputation. From that time on until his death on June 9, 1870, at Gadshill, near Rochester, England, he continued to write. His most famous work is Pickwick Papers, his best, The Tale of Two Cities, and the most popular Christmas Stories. He is buried in Westminster Abbey.
