I. The study of the changes produced in bodies by heat is based upon certain fundamental laws, as the laws of Mariotte (or Boyle), and of Gay Lussac (or Charles). There are also certain well known experimental facts, such as that the specific heat of all permanent gases is a constant, Regnault's data relating to steam, etc. To all bodies, however, two fundamental principles are applicable, expressing two kinds of relations in which their temperatures, volumes, pressures and other properties stand to each other.
