Excerpt from Lyrical Poems: And Thoughts in Rhyme

To the innumerable persons who, like the-author, have led somewhat of a double existence, engrossed for the most part in the trivial pursuits of practical life, yet wandering at times into the region of philosophical speculation, and feeling often, though but seldom and then with difficulty expressing the rapturous impulses of the poet, - many of the thoughts and emotions in the following pages, though clad in mean attire, will be familiar as old and confidential acquaintances.

Written at intervals during the leisure moments of several years, it was only natural that some diversity of style and senti ment should be exhibited. Except in the earlier pieces, the prevailing feeling which struggled for utterance was that of an overwhelming sense of human insignificance and ignor ance, when compared with the infinitude above us and the positive knowledge at present beyond our reach. And who ever refiects cannot be wholly a stranger to this sentiment. For, laying aside the dreams and theories of philosophy, and assuming the existence of an outer world as it appears to us, and that sense conveys correct impressions and science is substantially true, we still find ourselves enveloped in doubt and our sources of information lamentably few. To have no means of communication with the world of immaterial spirits, and yet to believe that only a veil separates us from the unseen, and that the mysterious something we call self.
