Excerpt from Shadows, Vol. 15: The Creighton University Magazine; June, 1924
Well, my last exam is from one to three. Friday, and I guess I will take the and get home before Sunday. Friday follows Thursday's busy day of packing, and as you shake hands and say good-bye to your pals you receive their hearty wishes for a pleas ant summer vacation, and you inevitably return the compliment. But do you really know how you are going to spend that vacation? Have you any plans for a healthful and enjoy able leave from your books? I venture to say that 95 per cent of the Creighton students go home and forget about themselves and through want of foresight waste their vacation. What is a vaca tion for? Is it the period during which you are allowed to go home and display yourself to the na tives, or is it the three months' hard labor term? Will you go home and be the vogue type, com parable to the Farnam street dude? Be the boy with the bi. Head (far too large, by the way. For all that is in it, and with rooms to let); have it surmounted by a very large hat; trousers into which your legs seem to have been melted and poured; a pair of toothpick shoes; an abbreviated topcoat; an eye-glass in your ocular, and a stick in your hand so thick as to make your legs look thin by comparison; carry your arms at an angle of forty-five degrees, and walk like a consumptive kangaroo. Be the creature that makes an old Nebraska farmer exclaim, Gosh! What things a man do See when he ain't got his gun handy! Strut the village street and rot with laziness. Or will you go home and toil from morn till night behind the plow or counter, harden your hands with honest work, and forget that you are having a vacation? If you are coming back to school in the fall after spending that first kind of a summer, remember that you haven't had a vacation. Why? Because you didn't know how to take one.
