He was born at Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, November 22, 1883. It was a little village on the Wisconsin River, and the life of this boy was that Of a farmer lad, with all a farm's limitations in that early period of his country's history. His father, a small carpenter, had never gone to school a day in his life; but it was his ambition to give to each of his seven children a high school edu cation.
