N presenting this volume to the public, a few words may not be out of place, as it regards the history of the author. Suffice it to say that he was born in Philadelphia, was a son of Samuel W. Rush, who was educated at the University of Pennsylvania for the legal profession, his mother being the accomplished daughter of the late Hon. Edwin Rees, of Mississippi and grandfather of the author, William Rush, the first American sculptor.
