Excerpt from Student Life at Edinburgh University
There was a good school in the Village, the schoolmaster Of which, fortunately, loved learning for its own sake, and I thus received a good education, which embraced Greek and Latin.
William Black and I were great friends. He was the minister's son, and a fine, manly fellow, some two years younger than I. As Will was also destined for the ministry, we had many interests in common, and many precious moments were wasted by us in talk ing over what each Of us would do after we had entered the University.
