Excerpt from The People of God, Vol. 1 of 2: An Inquiry Into Christian Origins

The first of these two volumes deals with the authority of the Old Testament and its religion; the second with the origin of the Church and the ministry. It may, perhaps, be asked why two subjects so distinct from each other are not treated in two separate books. The answer is, because both are included in an account of Christian origins as organic parts of a single whole.

This will be most readily seen if I state here the central position which links the two extremes together. Jesus, it is agreed by all, freed men from the burden of the Jewish Law. But how, and in what sense '2 If He freed any one, He freed the Jews of His own day. And they believed they were bound to the Law as to an ordinance supernaturally given by God Himself. Jesus, then, could have freed them only in one or other of two ways. Either, He taught them that the Law had never been supernaturally revealed, and that therefore they need no longer consider themselves to be under any obligation towards it or else, He shared their belief in the supernatural authority of the Law and delivered men from it by claiming to be endowed by God with a similar supernatural authority to annul the Old and inaugurate a New Covenant. It will be seen in Chapter VIII of this volume that the latter alternative alone is in accordance with the facts of history.
