This book, the second in the series of intermediate read ers, has been constructed on the same ethical principles as its predecessor.
The central theme is labor, personal activity with its benefit to the individual and to the community. The theme is enlarged and enriched with anecdote, narrative, description, and poetry, giving the pupil the ad vantage of a great variety of material with unity of underlying purpose.
The subordinate theme portraying the humane treat ment of domestic animals, is set forth in a number of inci dents which show the usefulness and loyalty of these creatures to man, and their consequent right to proper care from him.
