When I speak of the Bible I mean the English translation of the Hebrew Scriptures and the Greek Testament. The translators of these writings tapped the purest springs of the English lan guage. Whether or no they rendered the exact meanings of the original words of the Hebrew and Greek texts is, in this connection, of small matter. As it has been given us, in the Authorised and Revised Versions, the Bible is the noblest monument of English we possess; a book of magnificent language embodying the aspirations of men and women for an ideal to be cherished as an abiding influ ence on life.
