Even if there be among the above-mentioned injuries many which do not lead to tetanus, nevertheless the possibility of this deadly disease is sufficient to justify the prophylactic injection of serum. Numerous surgeons, especially Kocher, take this view. One would then expect that tetanus would thus be prevented, or would at all events take a benign course. In cases where tetanus sets in, one is obliged to resort, in addition, to enucleation, if the eye is the site of the injury, so as to remove the source of infection.
