Some two years ago. The author undertook the preparation of a suitable text for use in the Service Schools at Fort Leavenworth, and published a portion of The Rifle in War. This first edition was prepared under a considerable stress of other work and while very incomplete and fragmentary served its purpose as a basis for his conferences on this subject with the students of the several schools. The need for a more permanent and complete presentation of the subject, however, led to a revision and completion of the Origi nal edition and although the author's work as an instructor in two departments interfered with the proper preparation of the text of the revision to a very considerable extent, it was at last accomplished.
