Most medical schools turn out the medical student of to-day having taught him much of diagnosis, little of therapeutics, and still less of medical ethics. The science of medicine is taught today as thoroughly as our scientific knowledge permits, but the rules and laws of conduct governing the profession in their rela tion to each other and the peculiar professional relations between the doctor and his patient, are left for each individual student to acquire by experience as he goes along. Formerly, when the preceptor system was in vogue and every young student attached himself to some older physician, each one acquired the traditions of the profession and absorbed the result of the elder's experience in life and was thus saved many mistakes that he otherwise might have made.
