Naturally the turnover of money in Germany (without taking the huge demands of the army into consideration) is smaller in war than in peace. This fact is well illustrated for instance in the table given below as to the transactions of German clearing houses. The natural explanation is to be found in the reduced demand for labour in industry and commerce, and above all in the absence of the activity of the stock exchange.
