F we make our first approach to the Bible on the side of the Old Testament, we see much that looks to us, at first sight, unlike what we might expect to find in a volume given to us by divine inspiration. We meet, at the very out set, with an account of the creation of the world which seems to be essentially at variance with modern science, and of an apparently universal deluge which the philosophy of the present day de clares to have been impossible; we encounter a chronology which does not leave room for the peopling of the world with those multitudes of men which must have existed at certain given periods, or for the succession of national and of natural changes which archaeologists and geologists assert to have taken place since man first appeared on earth; we find a history which, according to our fallible judg.
