In 1850 scandal and desperation create havoc in the lives of many English people. Encouraged to get out of sight and out of mind, emigration beckons. Many of the damned seek survival, and many of the decadent seek to restore positions of privilege. Their ship the Redemption, with its cargo of hope and ambition becomes a vessel of intrigue, her passengers realising one last roll of the dice awaits them at the bottom of the world. The ship makes landfall in New Zealand, the hell-hole of the South Pacific. In the ensuing scramble for wealth and power, old habits die hard. Sex and alcohol become rampant, huge risks are taken while the religious ideals of the colony’s founders and the desires of those in authority are ignored. The struggle for survival of the fiercely independent Irish peasants Patrick and Josephine Mahoney, and their ongoing feud with the aristocratic English wool barons, Humphrey and Emma Robinson, is an inspiring human drama, set amid the birth of a great nation.Über den Autor:
