This book contains the stories of the citizen soldiers of an Army Reserve unit who were among the first wave of reservists mobilized after September 11. "Deployed" is not a chronicle of war, but a portrait of how a group of civilians came to be called to extraordinary service to their country and how they adapted to long deployments while coping with family relations, military duties, and civilian careers. While the shock, anger, and fear resulting from the events of 9/11 propelled many reservists to gladly accept or even volunteer for the initial call of duty, ultimately they were unprepared for the reality of being an integral component for fighting the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq."Deployed" challenges the prevailing stereotype of returning soldiers as war-damaged citizens. It draws upon the life stories of forty-six citizen soldiers of the 893rd Army Reserve MP and explores how and why they joined the Army Reserve, how they dealt with the seismic changes in their lives during and after their deployments, the evolution of their relationships inside and outside their military unit, and their perspectives on the U.S. Army. The book also uncovers five pathways that define why these citizens joined the reserves, showing how basic needs and cultural idioms combined to stimulate enlistments. "Deployed" features three distinctive clusters of citizen soldiers: adaptive reservists who adjust quickly to the huge changes in their lives abroad and at home; struggling reservists whose troubles are more a product of home-grown circumstances than experiences specific to serving in a war zone; and reservists who are dismissive of military life while they live it and are against the war even as they fight it.
