"It was with great trepidation and excitement that we embarked on the task of designing a new media centre as there is so much that is eternal and sacred at Lord's. Our objective was to respect and savour the essential nature of Lord's at the same time as creating a building that will come to symbolise the most sophisticated and beautiful media centre in the world." Future Systems competition report, 1995 (2002-03-11)

Introduction Creating a building of any kind presents an incredible range of challenges to all of those involved. To construct a dramatically different building in a prominent area of London, generally known for its conservative nature, gave all of those concerned a taxing opportunity. The fact that the building stands majestically, at home yet individual and exceptional in its prime spot is a testament to all of the players in the construction game. The Marylebone Cricket Club as the patron to such an architecture, the architect designers, the engineers all came together - albeit with a few sparks on occasions - to achieve this fascinating and inspiring building. Much has been written on the wonder of the building itself which is clear and evident to any observer, but the process of making it happen is an interesting tale of courage and innovation and adds to the intrigue of the building itself. The construction techniques, although commonly used in boat building, were new to the building construction industry. This meant that all those involved in the project had much to offer as well as learn from their colleagues on the scheme. We decided that the best way to communicate this story was in the words of those who were involved in the procedures and so we present here edited interviews about the story of the Centre. Clearly these are only a handful of the large number of people involved in the building of the Media Centre, but the cross section of interviews begins to build up the complete picture in a variety of dimensions.
