Inhaltsangabe

'Modernization' has become the soundbite of the 1990s. The new thirst for modernity has permeated through every aspect of cultural life, form furniture design to politics, form lifestyle magazines to the built environment. Everywhere, it seems, there is a desire to pursue the progressive and the innovative, to modernize and to rationalize. What is the role of architecture within this quest for the modern? The modernism of the 1990s is very different from its precursors earlier this century. Where the pre-war Modern Movement saw itself as an instrument of social change, today's modernism is most visible in shops and restaurants; where the International Style tended towards standardization and uniformity, architects today aim for flexibility and individuality. In examining these and other contemporary issues, Modernism and Modernization in Architecture looks towards a new definition of modernism for our times. Placing architecture in the wider cultural context, the book opens with statements from influential individuals and institutions including Tyler Brule, Sir Terence Conran, IKEA and Lord Rogers. Essays by Iain Borden, Ilse Crawford and Jeremy Myerson then explore some of the most important questions surrounding modernism today. The main body of this book looks at the diverse ways in which modernism has manifested itself in Britain, New York, the western United States and Japan. Twenty-four projects are examined in detail, including work by Future Systems, Richard Gluckman, Richard Meier, Yoshio Taniguchi, Bernard Tschumi, Antoine Predock, Wendell Burnette, Tadao Ando and Toyo Ito. Introduction and project descriptions by Helen Castle, Jayne Merkel, Antoine Predock and Botond Bognar set the projects in their historical and contemporary context. Illustrated with over 155 photographs, plans and drawings, Modernism and Modernization in Architecture provides both thought-provoking analysis and a snapshot of the state of modernism at the end of the millennium.
