In an expanded and completely updated edition "Understanding Data Communications" reflects the major changes to communications technology since 1990. The revisions will include: an update of the topical networks and information utilities chapter to include ATM and frame relay; the LAN chapter will include Ethernet and Token-Ring networks, the use of switching hubs to overcome bandwidth constraints, and ATM LAN versus WAN evolution. Other important changes include expanded coverage of satellite communications; a discussion of serial and parallel interfaces; and a fully updated chapter on the standards-making organizations illustrating what shapes the industry today. The book includes review questions and problems at the end of each chapter and covers the whole spectrum of data communications from first principles. It assumes little prior knowledge of networking.
