When designing structures (bridges, anchors, aeroplanes) or studying forces that structures must resist, a model is needed to represent the system under consideration. In some cases, it is necessary to observe the forces and movements of the particles within that system, which is when models for microstructures are necessary. This monograph presents the theory and application of new methods for the continuum modelling of heterogeneous media. Many new areas are addressed, such as nonlinear phenomena in solid continuum mechanics, nonlocal effects in geomaterials, self-organization and pattern formation in materials science, and numerical aspects of higher order continua.
