The title 'infrared spectroscopy' is used to define a specific region of the electromagnetic spectrum. This region is much used in industry and elsewhere. The results are unusual because frequently they can apparently be interpreted in simple classical empirical terms; this means some care should be taken to grasp the connections with related spectroscopic methods.
