Aus dem Klappentext

These mantras of modern management will be instantly familiar to any reader of the business media in New York, London, or Singapore. Their ubiquitous presence is testimony to the powerful hold they exert on the psyche of international managers. But how easy is it to put them into practice in today's highly competitive marketplace? What impact can they actually have on a firm's performance? And what do managers who have struggled to implement these ideas really think of them? This groundbreaking book provides a rare insider's view of one company's search for the simplicity and focus demanded by contemporary business thinking. One of the oldest companies in the world, Inchcape plc went public mid-century and rose to glory first in the 1970s and again in the 1990s, before demerging at the end of the millennium. During a rollercoaster progression the company shed the complexity associated with its original conglomerate status, and moved toward the simplicity of a single, focused business. By doing this, its managers were seeking both to obey the mantras for success preached by management consultants and the business schools, and obtain the financial results to please that most ruthless of critics, the stock market. This compelling account of management under stress provokes some urgent questions about the influence of external forces on a company's strategies, and sounds timely warning against the current tendency to seek a formula for that elusive goal of continuos financial growth. If you ever wondered about the gap between management theory and practice, or the balance between people and the bottom line, then read on...
