Aus dem Klappentext

Savvy members of the safety, health, engineering, and management communities know that as technology accelerates, the risks and the potential for catastrophic loss dramatically increase as well. Daily, these professionals are challenged to produce innovative, cost-effective solutions, while satisfying the public?s increasing demand for a high level of safety in products and services. To help them meet this unprecedented challenge, renowned systems safety export, Dr. Stephenson, has produced the most authoritative and practical guide to planning, evaluating, upgrading, and managing productive system safety programs. Taking "Safety 2000"?the government term that refers to safety engineering and the development of safe products up to and beyond the year 2000?as his benchmark, the author standardizes and clarifies the ever-growing list of system safety tools, techniques, and approaches currently used by the aerospace, weapons, and nuclear industries and specifically applies them to traditional industrial safety situations. Appropriately, System Safety 2000 begins with an overview of all current systems safety efforts, focusing on their history, fundamentals and current status. The author first explains that system safety requirements were originally developed to meet "first time safe" requirements of nuclear weapons systems, then shows how and why, today, they are impacting on public and private sectors never previously involved in systems safety. From here, the Guide breaks new ground by pulling together and integrating the essential strands of competing safety systems approaches?including those used by both the Department of Energy and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers?to develop a pioneering model safety system program that readers can easily use to evaluate the advantages and limitations of their own system safety approaches. Simple, step-by-step guidelines then show how to develop a prioritized plan to transform your existing program into a model system safety program, one that systematically allows for expansion and standardization, without compromising your original programs. System Safety 2000 demonstrates conclusively why system safety analytical tools and techniques are such efficient, cost-effective planning and review tools. Its exceptionally lucid coverage of analytical trees, risk assessment and acceptance risk exposure, including total risk exposure code, gives readers an arsenal of analytical aids. And the easily accomplished techniques for energy trace and barrier analysis, project evaluation tree analysis, and management oversight and risk tree analysis (MORT) help you detect hazards earlier, isolate the root causes of mishaps, and develop successful accident avoidance programs. Because system safety represents the leading edge of the safety effort, the Guide is packed with information that helps you locate training sources, contact system safety personnel, and obtain database software. System Safety 2000 recognizes that the increasing complexity and high costs of many non-nuclear, non-aerospace applications mandates a new focus on initial safe design and "upstream" safety. Whether you work in the manufacturing, utilities, nuclear, aerospace, petrochemical, or construction industries?regardless of your level of previous system safety knowledge?you will find it an immensely valuable resource for building safety into all your functional tasks.
