FRANCIS C. MOON, PhD, is Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Cornell University. He is a former chairman of the university's theoretical and applied dynamics department and former director of its School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. A member of the National Academy of Engineering, Dr. Moon has authored numerous books, including Superconducting Levitation and Chaotic and Fractal Dynamics, both published by Wiley.
The study of nonlinear dynamical phenomena in materials processing has produced new ideas that have tremendous potential to help increase manufacturing production speed and improve product quality. This unique volume provides an introduction to these powerful phenomena and offers fresh methods for the diagnosis and control of nonlinear dynamics in manufacturing processing.
Bringing together contributions from leading experts in machining and forming processes as well as nonlinear and chaotic dynamics, the book is divided into two sections. Part I explores the direct application of nonlinear dynamics and chaos theory to machining, grinding, and rolling processes and addresses the difficult problem of chatter dynamics in cutting processes.
These chapters illustrate three generic dynamic subproblems--the stability of cutting processes, subcritical bifurcations, and chaotic vibrations--and present new mathematical models for understanding unstable materials processing dynamics.
Part II examines promising new concepts in nonlinear dynamics that may have direct uses in manufacturing processes--from impact, friction, and fracture dynamics to control methods that harness the theory of chaotic dynamics.
Bringing readers the latest developments from the frontier of nonlinear dynamics and materials processing, this book is a vital asset to researchers in many fields, including materials engineering, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, and manufacturing processes.
