Diode Lasers-An Innovative And Comprehensive Approach. Diode lasers are found in numerous applications in the optoelectronics industry, ranging from readout sources in compact disc players to transmitters for optical fiber communication systems. Diode Lasers and Photonic Integrated Circuits provides a comprehensive treatment of this technology, its principles and theory, treating students as well as experienced engineers to an in-depth exploration of this fast-growing field. Covering material for a two-semester course of graduate- or advanced senior-level study, this innovative book presents the engineering aspects first-introduces all elementary concepts, provides the necessary detail to accurately solve real problems-and then presents complex physical aspects only after a complete understanding of the operation of diode lasers has been achieved. Diode Lasers and Photonic Integrated Circuits includes:
* Over 270 illustrations
* Extensive appendices that provide both review and advanced material, as well as details of derivations
* Consistent notation throughout all chapters and appendices that allows for a self-contained treatment and varied levels of study
* A series of design examples of relatively complex photonic integrated circuits
* Example problems and a toolbox of techniques to apply to new advanced details as they arise
* Accurate and consistent calculations that illustrate analysis techniques, while agreeing with experimental data
* Complete coverage of matrix multiplication techniques which are more exact, general, and easier to comprehend for modern-day students

LARRY A. COLDREN is Professor in the Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Materials at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is also Director of the Optoelectronics Technology Center, an ARPA Center that also includes faculty at Cornell University as well as the San Diego and Los Angeles campuses of the University of California. He is the author of numerous publications and holds patents in the areas of ultrasonic signal processing devices, III-V microfabrication techniques, and various laser-related technologies. He is a member of several honor societies, received the Best Paper Award of the 1979 IEEE SU Transactions, and is a Fellow of the IEEE and OSA. SCOTT W. CORZINE, PHD, is a graduate of the University of California at Santa Barbara, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His graduate work involved the theoretical and experimental investigation of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers, and he has authored many papers and articles in the field. He has also contributed a chapter to a book on quantum well lasers dealing with the theory of optical gain in semiconductors. He is currently employed at Hewlett-Packard Laboratories in Palo Alto, California.

This welcome addition to the Wiley Series in Microwave and Optical Engineering is devoted to diode lasers and their use in many fascinating applications. Owing to their small size and high reliability, their coherent output, and amazing useful life of hundreds of years, diode lasers continue to appear in new applications in local area data communications and telecommunication networks, as well as in consumer products. Diode Lasers and Photonic Integrated Circuits provides a fresh look at this fast-growing technology. Written specifically as an engineering text, it initially builds upon practical and elementary aspects as a preparation for more complex physical problems treated in later chapters. To treat complex cavity designs, the transmission matrix approach is emphasized because it is especially relevant to the widespread use of computers, as well as the rise of vertical-cavity lasers. Several chapters are devoted to gaining a basic working knowledge of diode lasers before tackling the details of material gain and laser dynamics. The book provides problem-solving opportunities on real diode lasers before tackling the mathematical techniques for lateral waveguide analysis. Once operational matters are fully explored, Diode Lasers and Photonic Integrated Circuits proceeds to cover the electromagnetic wave aspects of diode lasers and related photonic circuits, which are crucial to the understanding of the more advanced types of devices used in modern communication links and networks. Throughout, the material is supplemented with extensive appendices, addressing readers of varied backgrounds, and providing both review material and details of advanced topics. What emerges is a comprehensive, self-contained treatment of diode lasers and photonic integrated circuits that makes this an ideal textbook for a one-year course at either the senior or graduate level. This book is also an excellent professional reference for experienced engineers and researchers in microwave and optoelectronics technology.
