Inhaltsangabe

Adolescence is often portrayed as an age of particular risk. Adolescents are not only considered a risk to themselves, but also to the rest of society. As a society, we are nervous of them, and consider them vulnerable, yet the seeds of successful and independent adult life are laid down in adolescence, and they need all the help and support that they can get at a challenging time. Adolescents at Risk: Against the Odds looks in depth at some of the key risks faced by adolescents, and at some of the ways in which they can be alleviated. The book is structured according to the operational challenges the research informs.

Aus dem Klappentext

The teenage years, according to popular culture, are a time of experimentation and risk-taking.  Certainly, all young people have a number of transitions to negotiate and some who face adversity are more vulnerable during this time than at others. Despite this, many young people do exceptionally well, even though the odds are stacked against them.

In this volume, Ann Hagell and John Coleman have gathered together internationally renowned experts to consider a range of disadvantages that may impact on adolescents, and suggest ways to help overcome them.  Adolescence, Risk and Resilience is concerned with demonstrating a positive approach to young people and their circumstances, and shows how the concepts of risk and resilience are related.

Contributors examine a range of issues including: families and the risks they pose, mental ill-health, offending behaviour, sexual risk, disability, being in care, and social exclusion.  All students and practitioners working with adolescents will find this up to date and thorough review invaluable, but especially in the fields of psychology, psychiatry, nursing, and social work.

Contributors: John Coleman, Nick Frost, Ann Hagell, Robert Macdonald, Sue Mills, Catherine O‘Brien, Jennifer Pearce, Jacqueline Scott, Kirsten Stalker, Panos Vostanis.
