"[An] immensely readable and elegant book." -- Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists "Exhaustively researched, brilliantly conceived, and beautifully written." -- New York Times Book Review "[A] boldly conceived, elegantly written, and unfailingly provocative history of the new age of space." -- Science "A lucid and comprehensive political history of the American, European, and Russian space programs." -- New Scientist "This highly acclaimed study approaches the space race as a problem in comparative public policy." -- The Astronomical Society of the Pacific "Once every decade or so, a book comes along that stands by itself as a remarkable contribution to the literature of a field. Such a work is Walter A. McDougall's... the Heavens and the Earth." -- Technology and Culture
Drawing on published literature, archival sources in both the United States and Europe, interviews with key participants, and important declassified material, McDougall presents the stories of the U.S., European, and Soviet space programs as fascinating examples of comparative public policy. McDougall argues that the Soviet Union made its way into space first because it employed the world's first "technocracy." Discussing the political leadership of Khrushchev, Eiscuhower, Kennedy, and Johnson, he makes clear why the United States quickly developed its own version of state-driven technology, how it succeeded, and what it cost - materially and morally.

Attractive dark blue cloth with gilt lettering on spine, black and white illustrations, 555 pp. The Heavens and Earth is a gripping account of the way the space race made the Cold War total, a competition for the loyalty of all peoples fought out in all arenas of social achievement, in which science textbooks and racial harmony were as much tools of foreign policy as were missiles and spies. Ranging from the secret deliberations of the Kremlin commissars to the vagaries of systems analysis and Space Age technology, this is a global book about a global subject. Walter Allan McDougall (born December 3, 1946) is an American historian, currently a professor of history and the Alloy-Ansin Professor of International Relations at the University of Pennsylvania. McDougall graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Amherst College and fought in Vietnam before completing his Ph.D. degree from the University of Chicago in 1974. He was a visiting scholar at the Hoover Institution, and a fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and the National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution. He also received an Earhart Foundation Fellowship. He was a professor at the University of California, Berkeley for 13 years before moving to Pennsylvania. He is a senior fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute and also an editor of Orbis, the quarterly journal of world affairs published by the institute. McDougall is the author of many books on history. In 1986 he received the Pulitzer Prize for History for his 1985 book .the Heavens and the Earth: A Political History of the Space Age, in which he examined the space programs and the politics of the US, Europe and the USSR, arguing that the Soviet Union made its way into space first because it was the world's first technocracy, which he defines as "the institutionalization of technological change for state purpose". He also examined the growth of a political economy of technology in the U.S. and the Soviet Union. This highly acclaimed study approaches the space race as a problem in comparative public policy. Drawing on published literature, archival sources in both the United States and Europe, interviews with many of the key participants, and important declassified material, such as the National Security Council's first policy paper on space, McDougall examines U.S., European, and Soviet space programs and their politics. Opening with a short account of Nikolai Kibalchich, a late nineteenth-century Russian rocketry theoretician, McDougall argues that the Soviet Union made its way into space first because it was the world's first "technocracy"-- which he defines as "the institutionalization of technological change for state purpose." He also explores the growth of a political economy of technology in both the Soviet Union and the United States. Artikel-Nr. 86697
