Second editions of books are usually occasions for fine-tuning the structure, polishing the prose, correcting a few inevitable typographical errors, and filling in whatever minor gaps have become apparent since the first edition was published.

In the case of The Book Lover's Guide to the Internet, however, putting together a second edition has meant compiling an almost entirely new book. The answers to almost every question the first edition covered, from "How can I get hooked up to the Internet without being a computer whiz?" to "What will I find when I get there?" have changed, in many cases dramatically.

The culprit, of course, is the Internet itself, which stubbornly refuses to stop growing and changing. In the two years since the first edition of this book was published, both the Internet and the number of people using it on a regular basis have grown at an exponential rate. In the early 1990s, veteran Internet users started to speak of "Internet years." Like the "dog years" used to reckon Fido's age in human terms, Internet years were an attempt to keep tabs on the exploding popularity and rapid-fire technological development of the Net. Over the last two years, Internet years have been reckoned in mere months, as the Net itself has doubled again and again in size, depth, and technical sophistication to accommodate the tidal wave of new users logging on.

Today, more than 50 million people around the world are connected to the Internet. In 1994, the entire World Wide Web consisted of about 140 Web sites. Today there are more than 500,000 places to visit on the Web and literally thousands are being added every day, many incorporating innovations such as streaming video and real-time chat facilities that would have seemed hopelessly futuristic only a few years ago.

But perhaps more important than the growth and development of the Net itself has been the mainstreaming of the Internet as a new dimension of everyday life for millions of people.... The premise of the first edition of this book--that the Internet represents a wonderful resource for anyone who is devoted to books and reading--has turned out to be an understatement. The Internet has added a whole new dimension to the experience of being a reader or writer. It has become, in fact, increasingly difficult to remain truly up to date with the world of books, literature, and the mass media without being hooked up to the Net.
