The first part of this proceedings volume deals with the three most relevant new areas of prostacyclin research: analysis of novel mechanisms of action in "traditional" target cells (vascular smooth muscle and platelets); study of the effect of prostacyclin on novel targets (e.g. endothelium); and examination and potential therapeutic use of the unique cytoprotective and antiatherosclerotic properties of prostacyclin.
