This volume is the result of the ESPRIT Technical Week 1984 held in Brussels, Belgium, under the auspices of the Information Technology and Telecommunications Task Force of the Commission of the European Communities. It is designed to report on technical progress made during the ESPRIT pilot year, to disseminate this information to a very wide audience, and finally to provide the readers with a state-of-the-art review of European R & D work within the five major areas of ESPRIT around which the volume is structured. The articles, taken as a whole, also provide a comprehensive discussion of the current state of research and development in the following areas: Advanced Microelectronics; Software Technology; Advanced Information Processing; Office Systems; Computer Integrated Manufacturing. A separate section has been devoted to the ESPRIT Information Exchange System focusing on the role of electronic communication in collaborative transnational research.
