Thyroid neoplasms are very common, affecting 5-30% of the US population. Thyroid cancer is now the 8th most commonly diagnosed cancer in women and an estimated 300,000 people in the U.S. have been diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Our understanding of what causes this cancer as well as treatment and monitoring approaches has rapidly changed over the past 5-10 years. Older textbooks lack many of these exciting changes. This book is a focused look at the new developments in our fundamental understanding of what causes thyroid cancer. It also explores novel new molecular markers that will soon be used to improve diagnosis and prognosis for patients with thyroid cancer as well as new therapies for advanced thyroid cancer. In order to complement these basic insights into thyroid neoplasms, this book also review the latest clinical approaches to caring for patients with thyroid cancer. These approaches include the emerging use of sensitive ultrasound, controversies in the use of radioactive iodine, PET imaging in thyroid cancer and the use of serum thyroglobulin in the surveillance for recurrent thyroid cancer. Two other areas, surgical approaches to medullary thyroid cancer and thyroid neoplasms in children, are important areas that often do not receive adequate attention.
This book is not intended to be a comprehensive ‘tome’ on thyroid neoplasms, but a focused resource exploring the advancement of our understanding of thyroid neoplasia and management of patients with this common disease.
