The aim of the series is to provide assessments and details of clinical and laboratory aspects of a comprehensive range of methods to facilitate and to assist in the laboratory diagnosis of abnormalities of the haemostatic and coagulation mechanism; both haemorrhagic and thrombotic. As in previous editions the emphasis is on the practical approach to the problems. Part of the present edition is devoted to the detection and investigation of thrombophilia. The introductory chapter is supported by others converned with specific, related topics including protein C and S, the serpin inhibitors of blood coagulation and lupus-like anticoagulants. An update on the laboratory investigation of fibriolysis has also been included, followed by a chapter evaluating the measurement of fibrinogen derivatives. A section, devoted to the occurrence and identification of impaired haemostasis in the infant has been included in the series for the first time. It fulfils a need for the availability of such information to the clinician, as well as being an aid to laboratory diagnosis in this specialized area. The final chapter, which examines the implementation of the INR system demonstrates the value of the application of prothrombin time standardization.
