A. M. Jenkins lives in Benbrook, Texas.
"Where are y'all going?" asks Trent as he checks the cash in his wallet.
It's the last Saturday before Thanksgiving, and Trent's getting ready to go out tonight too. I'm waiting for Brandon.
"There's a party at this girl named Misty's house," I tell Trent.
Trent kind of eyes me.
"Well, I'm glad you're getting out," he finally says, sticking the wallet in his back pocket. "And making some friends. I was about to put an ad in the paper for you. 'Sixteen-year-old straight white male, looking for friends. Likes square dances, hog-calling contests, and country music.'"
"Beats that crap you listen to," I tell him. He's checking his hair in the mirror. "You going to Dallas?"
"No. Everybody's getting together at Matt's place. Where are my keys?"
Trent's been seeing a lot of Matt lately. I don't ask him about it, because ever since the phone threats Trent's been a little touchy about discussing his relationships. I figure it makes him feel better to keep his life divided into two compartments. It's like he thinks I'm safer that way, all neatly tucked into one side.
"On the counter," I tell him. "Under the paper."
I just don't want Trent to ask for details on where I'm going. I'll tell him if he asks, but I'm not sure what he'd think about going to some lake house where there's no adults around.
I'm not planning on drinking a whole lot. I just haven't been to that many parties. In fact, none. I'm kind of curious, and I figure it beats sitting around by myself, right? I think I ought to get some points for even taking one step out.
Trent doesn't ask for details. He's obviously still been weighing this party thing out in his mind, though, because as he's heading for the door, he gives me this real serious look.
"You keep your head on straight, Charlie. Don't do anything stupid."
"I won't."
"Okay," he says, stepping out onto the landing.
"Have fun."
"You too," I tell him as he pulls the door shut.
