This is an approach to studying poetry at GCSE, Standard Grade and equivalent examinations. It aims to help students to develop the skills needed for comparing poems (an important part of the new GCSE English Literature syllabuses), write informed responses for coursework, and enjoy what they read. There are over 80 poems, both contemporary and pre-20th century, and the text is divided into two sections. Section A gives practical guidance on reading and responding to poetry, with a range of ideas to help students explore poems in different ways. There is also a substantial section on comparing poems. Section B contains selections of poems from ten poets: John Keats, William Blake, Christina Rossetti, Tennyson, Thomas Hardy, Wilfred Owen, Seamus Heaney, Sylvia Plath, Gillian Clarke and Grace Nichols. Each section contains background information about the poet and a range of activities including comparing poems by different poets.
