This is a book of hope. It is about a school that decided to make a difference in a demanding and difficult social environment where hostility, suspicion, poor communication, conflict and even violence were a daily pattern. It shows how a whole-school approach can and does work when staff have vision, good will, skills and determination to 'hang in there' for the benefit of children.
What they did - and how they did it - is the substance of this book. It describes the school as it was several years ago, when behaviour throughout the school and the welfare of the children within the school were of serious concern. It discusses indicators of school effectiveness, and goes on to describe Mayfield as it is today.
It also presents the various programs that were developed at Mayfield to minimise violence and to promote appropriate behaviors. These programs are of a whole-school and classroom-based nature and provide the reader with practical teaching and organisational strategies for developing positive behaviors.
The authors do not claim to provide a blueprint for all schools, but there is ample here in precept, principle and practice for any school to learn from and to translate to their situation.
It is a book for all staff, all schools.
