Finally, there are some learned words that may have been modelled on the -ata ending, namely, those masculines in -ate, such as carbonate, sulfate, etc., used in the nomenclature of chemistry. These have an added interest because, as Darme steter2 points out, they have a tendency to be changed by the people into feminines in -ade.
