Excerpt from The Story of Greece
Often be repeated, that we must interpret an ancient writer by himself and by his own age, and not by our modern notions. We must not add on to him our mysteries and moralities, or translate his con fused modes of thought into our more distinct ones (more distinct, at least, to us). Neither must we measure him by our standards of right and wrong. His range of View may be limited, but we cannot safely enlarge it. Nor can we argue from his incon sistencies or omissions of details; nor draw inferences from his precise words, because we cannot expect him to use legal accuracy.
