Tree stems were cut into 5 ft. Bolts from ground level to a top diameteri inches. A 1 -inch disc was sawn from the butt end of each bolt as well as the tip section. Each disc was weighed with and without bark, and measured for diameter with and without bark. Volume of each disc, without bark, was determined by displacement, and discs were then dried in an oven to a constant weight.

Stem volume, taper and weight equations were derived from this data base. The computational and analytical pro cedures used have been described elsewhere (pienaar, et al., These equations were used to generate the volume and weight tables which follow.
