To the following extent, however, the collection is representative: the stories were selected from several thousands read for the purpose; the authors represent the more important literary quarters of Germany and Austria; the scenes are laid in various sections of the two countries, in various periods, and in various strata of society.

Several stories have been abridged, but otherwise few liberties have been taken with the texts. The orthography has been made uniformly modern, but not to the exclusion of dialectic forms and usages.
