The young poet was now on the road to success. From 1860 to 1865 he was one of the secretaries of the Duke de Morny, the half - brother of Emperor Napoleon III, but we are told that his new position was a kind of a sinecure, Daudet calling at the office hardly more than once a month, on pay - day. He devoted his leisure hours to the writing of poems, newspaper articles and short plays. Soon his health failed as a consequence of the Bohemian life he was leading, and he was ordered to the country by his physician. He rented a dilapidated old windmill at Fontvielle situated in the very heart of Pro vence, on a hillside clothed with pine trees and green oaks, and there he began to write his'lettres de mon moulin which appeared first in a Parisian newspaper.
