A Full survey of the means of preventing human deterioration, as that of causing it, implies an infinite knowledge of man, nature and social conditions; we no more propose the one in this volume than we did the other in the first. If we have succeeded in opening up by our labors a comparatively new line of thought to specialists devoted to the various interests of man and society, we are rewarded.

If our first volume implied studies and sympathies of a life time, we paid more dearly than we dare tell for what we bring this time. Still, we are all debtors, and I present, not without diffidence, this, my best endeavor, to the friends of the race; may it prove its power by its work, which we trust it will by pleading for the perishing masses, upon the highways and in the byways, in the name of God and humanity, words inseparable, old and strong as the oak, and ever new as the rising sun in his morning glory.
