As a teacher of organic chemistry, I have felt the want of a small book on the subject. There is no lack of dictionaries and encyclopaedic works on organic chemistry, but they are too large for use in a college course. The few shorter English text-books are not, so far as my experience goes, well suited for teaching.

The following work, which has met with remarkable suc cess in Germany, and which the author, Prof. Pinner, has kindly given me permission to translate, is founded on the system of teaching developed by the distinguished chemist Prof. A. W. Hofmann, of Berlin, and in some cases follows his lectures quite closely.
