This book is a fairy tale set in a medieval-like fantasy world that follows a young boy named Godel von Kanaus, a descendant of nobleman Godel of Kanaus. Godel, the boy, is forced to flee his home when his family is murdered by raiders and his castle burned. Godel brings with him his wife, son, and a few of the family's prized possessions, including the family's pet/status symbol rooster and hens. They wander the land in search of a new home, meeting an assortment of fairy tale-like characters along the way, including a talking stork. The story incorporates themes of childhood, loss, homelessness, and class struggles.
