IN bringing this work before the public, I wish it to be understood from the outset, that it is not intended to form a complete course of the German language in itself, but only one part of it; and in my humble Opinion, the most impor tant s the practical, or as I would call it, the conversational part. Various circumstances hastened the publication of this work, which I intended to have delayed till the whole was completed. Among these I may mention: the nuques~ tionable success, based upon undeniable facts, obtained by this system; as well as the flattering approbation of the distinguished gentlemen of the Washington University, who were present at an examination, for the especial purpose of testing the system.
