As the year 2000 approaches, concrete has served well, but not without problems. Much is changing in the perception of concrete and the understanding of material performance and construction methods. It could be argued that revolution rather than evolution will be necessary to achieve excellence in the 21st century, exploiting the full potential of materials and methods. There is a need to consider the performance of new and traditional materials and to review trends and experience of design and specification. In order to maintain economy, concrete will have to be produced efficiently but not at the expense of durability. Construction techniques will have to develop in parallel with improvements in design methods and materials. These changes place ever greater demands on engineers and the role and impact of education and continuing professional development must keep abreast of the pace of technological change.
