First published in 1966, the Language of Criticism was the first systematic attempt to understand literary criticism through the methods of linguistic philosophy and the later work of Wittgenstein.

John Casey is the author of six works of fiction, as well as nonfiction and translations. He won the National Book Award for Fiction in 1989 for Spartina. Educated at Harvard College, Harvard Law School, and the Iowa Writers Workshop, he lives in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he is a professor of English at the University of Virginia.
